history
olabird & Root, Chicago’s oldest architecture firm, was founded in 1880 by William Holabird and Ossian Cole Simonds, former associates of William LeBaron Jenney, a pioneer of the modern skyscraper. In 1881, Martin Roche joined them, and the firm soon became Holabird & Roche.
They helped shape the Chicago School movement, designing early skyscrapers like the Tacoma Building (1889) and the Marquette Building (1895), along with landmarks such as the Palmer House hotel. Their work even featured in the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games.
In 1928, under the leadership of John Augur Holabird and John Wellborn Root Jr., the firm was renamed Holabird & Root.
Today, operating from the historic Marquette Building, the firm continues its legacy, blending architecture, planning, and interior design to create spaces that stand the test of time.
