Study Hotel

Where scholarship meets sanctuary, The Study at the University of Chicago reimagines campus hospitality as an elegant extension of academic life. Designed and delivered by Holabird & Root in partnership with Hospitality 3 | Study Hotels, the 15-story, 150,000-square-foot hotel includes 167 rooms, a restaurant, a fitness center, meeting spaces, and 4,700 square feet of flexible conference areas, all anchored by an outdoor plaza overlooking the historic Midway Plaisance. The design organizes the building into three legible massing elements: a warm, residentially scaled ground-floor lounge and restaurant wrapped in open storefront glass; a transparent second-floor conference level; and a stone-clad guest room tower articulated with vertical seams and a rhythmic module of precast concrete, dark metal, and operable windows. Inside, natural light, curated art, and Study Hotels’ brand signatures — Strand-selected books, leather reading chairs, wood writing desks, and Lake Michigan or campus views — create a hospitality experience rooted in comfort and intellectual character. The building’s contemporary masonry skin bridges the Study brand’s modern aesthetic with the University’s Collegiate Gothic legacy, synthesizing old and new into a cohesive architectural expression that deepens the guest’s connection to place.
